Introduction
The Nepal Sanskrit University-Institute of Sthapatya is committed to promoting quality research and liberal education. Our programs are designed to foster student-centered learning, interactive participation, and international exposure. We encourage our students to participate in various international mooting programs and exchange programs, and our faculty regularly hosts distinguished scholars and academic conferences from around the world.
Sthapatyashastra, as described by Maharishi, is the science of establishing. It is the most ancient and complete system of architecture and city planning in accordance with natural law, taking into account the influences of the planets, the North and South poles, and the equator. Nepal is renowned for its unique architecture, which ranges from the flat-roofed houses of the western Himalayas to the sloped roof architecture of the Kathmandu valley, blending bricks and timber. However, modern architecture in Nepal often fails to reflect the country's rich heritage and identity.
The Nepal Sanskrit University, as a fountain of traditional knowledge and skills, has embarked on a plan to offer an architecture course with a focus on Vedic architecture and planning. The goal is not to reject western architecture, but to look back to the past and find ways to incorporate timeless characteristics into contemporary architecture. The objective is to infuse the spirit of the place, a genius loci, into the planning of cities and the design of buildings in the present.
The Institute of Sthapatya at Nepal Sanskrit University works closely with engineering norms and the profession. By studying Sthapatya, students will gain an understanding of Nepal's ancient architecture and be able to create architecture that reflects the traditional attributes of Nepal. They will also be able to plan cities that are rooted in the tradition and culture of the country. By offering this course, Nepal Sanskrit University aims to preserve the technical knowledge of Nepal's ancient architecture for future generations, attract more cultural and educational tourism, and financially strengthen and sustain the university through technical education.
